Urbaser Environmental Ltd, UK waste treatment division for Cheltenham based environmental services company Urbaser Ltd, are celebrating the commencement of a 3-year contract to deliver operation and maintenance services on behalf of Dudley Council at their Lister Road Energy from Waste (EfW) facility. The contract was awarded in December 2022 and has the option to extend for up to a further 2-years.

The Lister Road EfW facility has been operational since 1998 and continues to provide a waste treatment solution on behalf of the 322,500 residents in the Dudley Metropolitan Borough, as well as a number of commercial customers. The facility has a consented capacity of up to 105,000 tonnes per annum and generates approximately 7.40 MWe via its dual-line combustion and energy generation process.

As part of new contract, Dudley Council will benefit from being able to sell energy back to the national grid, which has the potential to generate substantial income for the council.

Councillor Rob Clinton, cabinet member for waste management and climate change, said, “As an authority, we must dispose of household waste in the most efficient and cost-effective way.

“We’re really pleased to be working with Urbaser under the new arrangement. The contract will offer up significant financial savings in the short-term and has the potential to generate substantial income from the sale of the electricity we produce, which is great news for public purse.

“We hope in the future to use the electricity we produce to power our vehicles and buildings, which could reduce our demand on fuel and gas.”

This latest contract success will expand Urbaser Ltd’s waste treatment capacity within the neighbouring counties which includes the Gloucestershire EfW facility which became operational in October 2019, and the EnviRecover EfW facility, operated by Severn Waste Services, as part of the integrated waste management PFI contract with Worcestershire County Council and Herefordshire Council.

Javier Peiro, Managing Director of Urbaser UK, said, “We are thrilled to have commenced operations at the Lister Road facility and starting, what we hope will become, a long-term collaboration with Dudley Council.

“Given our established portfolio of energy from waste facilities in neighbouring regions, we will utilise our existing regional expertise and network of local suppliers and subcontractors to maximise value for money for the council whilst enhancing the existing service levels at the facility.”
